This simple walkthrough shows how to delete files from the My Downloads folder under my files in the Nook Color Library.

First connect your Nook to your computer using the special Nook USB cable. The cable light will turn an orange colour and the blue USB Mode dialog will appear on the Nook screen. On your computer select MyNookColor in the Finder window, and open the My Files and My Downloads folders. Select the files you want deleted, in the example screen shots above I select four files in this folder for deletion. My Downloads also permits you to transfer PDF and other compatible documents to this folder from your computer as well. Ensure to properly Eject the Nook in Finder.

NOTE: I inadvertently hit the power button on my Nook whilst creating screen shots for this tip, and Mac OS X (Version 10.6) automatically ejected the device. This is not a recommended operation, but is interesting to know nonetheless.

The final screen shot shows a view of the My Downloads folder on the Nook.

Use Clear to cut connection costs.

(To view a larger image with more detailed description tap or click its thumbnail.)

Prior to the purchase of my new iPad 2, I made a personal pact with myself to keep my limit of having two AT&T bills a month. Although not dissatisfied with their coverage in my local area, the company & I part ways on the meaning of the term normal use. My first generation iPad has the original unlimited data contract, but using 3G service on my iPhone 4 and new iPad 2 for prolonged time, could potentially cost exorbitant amounts. For this reason I chose the wifi only iPad 2 model. Therefore, I decided to investigate alternatives.

I discovered Clear, and use it (not abuse it) for my normal everyday Internet provider service. It is 4G, has great coverage in my local environs of the North Carolina “Triad” area in America, and the bill is reasonable. Oh yes, unlimited for $55 USD/mth. on month to month contract, $45/mth. with two year contract (as of date of this post). I also use the portable Clear Spot device and it enables me to take 4G with me.

Yes this is another GoodReader post, but this time I am using it to illustrate how to send more than five photos to an email recipient at once.

In essence, I am using a feature of the Manage Files panel to select ten photos, create a zip file, then in turn send the zipped photos via email. I then opt to clean up the mess and delete the local copies saved in My Documents. Use the screen shots above to view each step of the process with descriptions.

How to lock screen orientation on the iPad.

(To view a larger image with more detailed description tap or click its thumbnail.)

Apple released iOS 4.3 a scant four days ago, and many users do not know that they once again have the ability to lock their iPad screens. This easy walkthrough demonstrates how.

First open Settings, select the General category, and on the right pane under the Use Side Switch to: section, tap Lock Rotation. The Side Switch pictured above once again locks the screen to your desired viewing orientation.

I have met some new users of the iPad and iPhone that were unsure or unaware of how to select multiple photos in their photo album to do common tasks such as emailing them to another party, deleting unwanted photos, copying to paste in another application, or printing to a connected printer.

Open Photos and a photo album. Tap the button located at the top right of the screen, you will now be able to select multiple photos. The Email, Delete, Copy and Print buttons are now visible in the top left area of the screen. To select a photo, simply tap it once. Once a photo has been selected a small blue check (tick mark) is placed in the corner of the photo. To deselect the photo, tap once more.

For emailing photos, five is the maximum allotted by the system, selecting more disables the Email button.

After performing an operation, you may either click the Home button, or tap the Cancel button at top left to return to normal album view.

Tomorrow I will post a technique on how to send more than five photos in one email.

iPad vs iPad 2 sound comparison.

I used a track sample of my favourite axe-god Slash to help perform an informal comparison on sound playback on the iPad and iPad 2.

Both iPads had the same screen settings – and befitting Slash – the volume for both cranked up to the highest level possible.

In the linked video, the original iPad is on the left, and the iPad 2 on the right. My opinion is that sound quality is better on the iPad 2 and slightly louder, and that colours appear richer on the iPad 2 as well.

Click this link for a video of both iPads playing the track concurrently.

Fix 3G data problems on the iPhone.

(To view a larger image with more detailed description tap or click its thumbnail.)

Recently I went on a trip out of town and had problems receiving a cell data connection upon arrival at my destination. I used the following technique to reset my iPhones data connection.

I opened settings, and turned Airplane Mode ON. I then waited about 15 seconds, and toggled the Airplane Mode slider back to the OFF position. This forces the phone to ardently search for mobile data providers, and almost always corrects data connectivity issues.

The screen shots above show this procedure in action and the Facebook application receiving updates.

The following images detail from 16:00, to the opening of the store at 17:00, purchase & unboxing.

I think I now will charge my new iPad and take the opportunity to check out new features.

On closing: I met many nice, funny and interesting people today & wish to see them in the future at a local Triad tablet user meetup. Click “Read More…” link to see a slideshow of events.

Noon update from the Apple store in Greensboro, NC

Noon update from the Apple store (Friendly Center) in Greensboro, NC.

Contrary to ones expectations of early morning temperatures in the American South — it was very cold when I arrived at 5:00 AM to queue up at the Apple Store this morning to purchase the iPad 2. I also discovered that I was second in line after die hard Apple father Doug and his daughter Tori, being customer(s) one whom had arrived at 1 AM.

Photos taken from shortly after arrival at 5 AM to 12 noon.
